A Romance of Three Kingdoms is adapted from one of the most famous Chinese classic novels with the same title by Luo Guanzhong, and based on the history of the Three Kingdoms period (220AD-280AD). The TV serial describes the intricate and tense struggles for the throne among three powerful political forces: Liu Bei, Cao Cao and Sun Quan, and focuses on various great talents and bold strategy during that period. It is an epic times that carries many different outstanding heroes. To reproduces his historical period, China Central Television spent nearly four years on shooting the serial with 84 episodes, and a great deal of funds, manpower & material resources.

中央电视台拍摄的大型古装电视连续剧《三国演义》是依据历史长篇小说改编而成的，这个作品以宏大的结构描写了公元184年到280年间东汉末年，中原大地豪强并起，魏、蜀、吴三国纵横捭阖，逐鹿争雄的军事斗争和政治斗争，表现出鲜明的拥刘反曹的正统思想和儒家的仁政思想。同时也谴责了雄豪混战及暴君的苛政，寄托了人民渴求明君仁政，社会安定的愿望，表现了群众所理想的重义首信、平等互助的人与人的关系。 电视连续剧《三国演义》八十四集重点突出群雄争霸之三十六计种种谋略；气势磅礴，真实地再现了三国时期战事连绵，哀鸿遍野的战争场面及人才辈出，各领风骚的英雄时代，向后人展示了：雄才伟略，足智多谋，尽在三国。

　　电视剧《三国演义》在人物的塑造方面卓有成就，不仅各类人物立场分明、爱憎清楚，而且主要角色都个性生动、色彩鲜明。诸葛亮的智慧和辛劳，曹操的多疑和奸诈，刘备的聪颖和眼泪，孙权的坚定和明智。编导特别注意把人物放到现实斗争中的尖锐矛盾中，通过各自的言行表现其思想性格。通过粗线条的勾勒和环境气氛的渲染，取得传神的艺术效果，使人物形象栩栩如生。
　　该片善于运用传神的拍摄手法去刻画人物的思想性格，更擅长于描写战争。这部小说写了大大小小的一系列战争，展开了一幕又一幕惊心动魄的场面。它所描写的官渡之战、赤壁之战、彝陵之战等各次战争各有特点，或实写或虚写，将紧张激烈、惊心动魄的战争也因此表现得有张有弛，具有旋律节奏富于诗情。总之，战争在编导笔下千变万化，不重复，不呆板，充分表现了战争的复杂性和多样性。
　　电视剧《三国演义》还有一个十分成功的地方，就是整体布局和气氛安排也是高明之极。例如刘备三顾茅庐，一步一步把主角诸葛亮从喧天的锣鼓声中引出场来；又例如“草船借箭”的写箭，“借东风”的写风，一步逼一步地扣得极紧。
　　电视剧《三国演义》在艺术上是成功的，它代表了中国古代历史剧的最高成就。它采用浅白的文言，明快流畅，雅俗共赏。它以宏伟的结构把近百年时间内头绪纷繁、错综复杂的事件和众多的人物组织得完整严密，叙述得有条不紊。它几近完美的演绎了这一段辉煌的历史，弘扬了民族传统文化，因此这部电视剧早已脱离了电视剧的一般意义而上升到了历史资料的高度，这是前无古人的创造。
